Thermify is company that is developing a radical new solution to replace gas boilers. The HeatHub is an eco-friendly device that captures waste heat generated by cloud computing and reuses it to provide heating and hot water for people looking to reduce their bills and companies looking for environmentally friendly alternatives.
Thermify aims to significantly reduce the environmental impact of cloud computing while lowering energy costs.
As the concept progressed, Thermify required specialist engineering support to translate a technically ambitious idea into a practical and testable system that could demonstrate real world performance and future scalability.
Optima Design were invited to support the development of the Thermify HeatHub, helping to take the innovative heating concept through to a full scale testing and demonstration rig suitable for implementation. Working closely with Thermify’s technical team, Optima provided mechanical, thermal and systems engineering expertise to shape the product architecture and resolve integration challenges.
Using detailed 3D CAD, Optima developed the complete HeatHub system layout, integrating cloud computing hardware, thermal interfaces and domestic heating connections within a compact and serviceable enclosure. Rapid prototyping was used throughout the project to validate layouts, assembly methods and installation considerations, allowing the design to evolve quickly and efficiently.
Thermal and system simulations were carried out to assess heat transfer performance, fluid flow and operating conditions. This simulation led approach helped optimise efficiency and reliability, ensuring the system could safely and consistently deliver usable heat within a residential environment.
Optima Design supported the sourcing of key components and worked with specialist suppliers and manufacturing partners to produce the demonstration rig. Consideration was given to manufacturability and future scalability, with design for manufacture principles applied to key assemblies to support potential low volume and future production builds.
The completed HeatHub demonstration rig successfully validated Thermify’s approach to reusing cloud computing waste heat for domestic heating. The project delivered a fully engineered and tested platform that demonstrated technical feasibility, supported stakeholder engagement and laid the groundwork for pilot installations and further commercial development.
The HeatHub has reduced the energy costs of an elderly couple from £375 a month down to £40 and is making headlines on the BBC. It demonstrates Thermify’s commitment of “reducing pressure on our environment, and the pockets of our most vulnerable in society.” Find out more about this story here.
