Communications Tablet

MICROL.392Microlise is a European leader in vehicle tracking, telematics, journey management and proof of delivery systems supplier.

They have a long standing reputation for innovation and have launched a wide range of first to market products. In Summer 2013 Microlise continued this tradition with the launch of The DCM6 is a 7” ruggedised Android based touch screen driver communications tablet which can be fixed in-vehicle or used as a hand-held device via a clever magnetic charging bracket.

The device offers a wide range of customisable features including driver ID, text and voice communications, Trip sheet, integrated satellite navigation, task management and unique driving style coaching and debrief functionality.

Optima have along standing relationship with Microlise, having assisted in the development a number of their market leading systems. For the DCM6 product Optima developed a range of initial sketch and CAD concepts examining the best materials, processes and technologies. From these a route was chosen to utilise thermoplastic elastomer materials with rigid elements to form a protective ‘boot’ for the device, with fully integrated power and contact elements. This was coupled to a unique cable management and power delivery magnetic universal dock, which is fixed on a bracket system within the CAB and allows the device to be removed for delivery signature and other customer interactivity.

In conjunction with Microlise’s in-house specialist team, Optima developed this complex product through a variety of iterations to the level of tool ready CAD, including the sourcing of a range of component parts and prototypes to ensure the product fitted the demanding in-cab environment.

Matt Hague, Product Strategy Director at Microlise comments, “We’ve seen great success in the couple of months since we launched our SmartPOD application for smart phones, re-using this software but tailored for a new in-vehicle Tablet has helped us come to market with a cost effective, very functionally rich and flexible in-vehicle communications solution for our customers”.
