BAE SYSTEMS – M777 Howitzer

Design and analysis of a complex castings

Background

Optima have a long standing relationship with BAE Systems, specifically within Land and Weapons. Services provided have ranged from extensive engineering research and analysis projects to conceptual design schemes, including future vehicle conceptual design.

The M777 is a 155mm ‘mobile’ Howitzer that has been utilised by a wide variety of sovereign forces including the UK, US and Indian Armed Services. The hardware was designed to be a ‘light-weight system’ that could be easily deployed via aircraft.

Outcome

Optima provided FEA analysis to ensure critical components of the weapon, including the saddle and the spades, were both light enough to meet exacting weight requirements, yet strong enough to withstand the extreme loads generated when in operation.
